I had my cockatiels wings and nails clipped about 6 weeks ago, her nails are really long again, is it time to take her to the bird store and get them clipped again?

A Cockateil will need his wings clipped about every 4 to 6 months. The same applies to nail trimming.

Be very careful about the rough perches, as they have been known to damage some bird's feet.

You can use an emory board or a diamond file to file off the needle-like points if they get too sharp. Just make sure that you do it lightly and do not go too far. You will probably need a helper and need to towel the bird to restrain her.

And please do not listen to those who want to tell you that you should not clip your bird's wings. For every person saying that , there will be 2 or 3 people crying because their bird escaped , flew into a wall and broke its neck, or even( I actually knew someone who had this happen! ) flew into a pot of boiling soup !!

You are being a responsible bird owner by clipping the wings !

If you are interested ,I can direct you to a Yahoo bird group which has a large library of bird files. Included are files on clipping wings and trimming nails. Just E-mail me.

Good luck !

The wings you should only have to clip a few times a year, after they molt and new wing feathers grow in. The nails will grow much quicker though and if the bird isn't using one of the perches or toys that help trim the nails down you could have to get them done probably every 6-8 weeks depending on how fast your birds nails grow. If you get tired of this it's really easy to learn to do yourself. Next time you take the bird in ask the person to show you how its done. I do all my birds nails and wings myself, just so much easier than taking them all to a vet or store to get it done every time it needs it.

I don't clip my Cockatiels wings either- Cockatiels are very smart. Mines comes out and flies and eventually goes back home for a drink or for food and stays in for a bit- I just close him in then. My Cockatiel flies around the house for about 5 hours every three days. The only down side is cleaning the poop- and b4 letting him out you might want to bird proof ur home- but this is simple and only take a couple of minutes if- you can research it online for tips and if you watch ur bird for a couple of days you will figure out what inclines him that you need to remove. As for the claws part- I have never clipped my birds claws but its because his cage is too big to fit into the car (it stands upright) and I can't find anything convenient to take him to get this done. But his nails are very long- and he likes to play with humans- which becomes problematic- its such a feeling that anyone who he walks on gets goose bumps. I don't know about his nails being long within a couple of weeks though- mines became problematic after the second year. I would ask the person in the pet shop or vet who clips his nails for a recommendation. And I am going to heed the advice of many on here and get the claw grinding perch for my Cockatiel- I was going to but was afraid to thinking that it might just make his nails thinner but sharper.

You can at good pet stores get a rock /cement/coral perch type thing and the birds sit on it and grind there own nails like in the wild.It may be in the parrot area just get one about the size of you're pinkie

I would never clip there wings or nails. You can buy perches that have sand or grit in them and these will keep their nails under control. As for clipping their wings, I would not recommend it. They are meant to fly and this is how they get their exercise. You have to let them out of the cage every once in a while so they can fly around to get this exercise to keep them healthy.

For people who insist on clipping their birds wings, I recommend only doing one wing and only every second primary feather of that wing. Make sure you don't clip into their wing stub and are best to leave it to your pet store to do. You will only have to do this once a year. This will keep them from flying which to me is sort of cruel.

once I somewhat have been given my first cockatiel I took it back to the breeder and had her prepare me the thank you to do it. it incredibly is extreme priced to have an avian vet prepare you, yet puppy shops that have cockatiels each and every each and every so often have an expert there who will can fee you for trimming, yet will prepare you thoughts it incredibly is accomplished. yet in a distinctive way is to look at a diagram in a cockatiel e book. in case you're raising them, you will have a sort of of of those books on your place. whilst i grew to grow to be raising them, I consistently clipped the toddlers wings as promptly as they fledged (got here across to fly) and till now i bought them, and shown the customers precisely what to do.
