does anyone know an owl in the uk that hoots day and night during winter? i live in a block of flats near a lot of trees and a city park and we have all heard some owls hooting now for almost a week. its like a deep howling 'hoot' that ends softly then there are also distinctive high pitched squawks as well. what makes them unique to the other birds is that they are active and making noises at night especially between midnight and 4am but the odd hoot will happen throughout the day as well and it's very loud and can be heard all the way 10 minutes walk up the main road. the hooting has become more frequent. i am thinking perhaps long eared owls, but i live right in a city centre and have heard that these are rather rare and only in the countryside. i live in a very urban area but there are also a lot of trees and grass.

That is a Tawny Owl calling, at this time of years they are marking out their territory and calling to find a female mate ready for the breeding season.

Long Eared Owls try to avoid built up areas and do not call during daylight hours where as Tawny Owls will call.

It is a barred owl. And you ought to have a license to have raptors. They don't supply license away to anyone. You ought to be qualified in a specified field to have license, even for falconry you need to be taught and take a scan. A bard owl would simplest be on a education allow. Most falconers aren't looking for a barred owls for falconry. I have no idea why ? They're excellent at catching squirrel. However for falconry it is by and large the high-quality horned owl and very few falconers are occupied with owls due to the fact that they are very rough to teach, like trying to coach a cat to fetch. However owls smooth handy so may Europeans via owls for pets. Owls should now not be regarded pets. The are predators and may also be harmful if now not handled in the proper means. In case you are particularly serious about raptors you must determine together with your state to see if there is a falconry membership on your state. That you may buy non native owls with out allows as amazing birds but you need to pay quite a bit for them.
