A mallard duck layed eggs in our yard. She started coming 2 weeks ago today. And she had actually started nesting on them on monday. Our yard is fenced in so the ducks wont leave until they can fly most likly. but we DO have a pool. So the ducks go in that (main reason the ducks nested here). We were thinking of putting our little plastic kiddie pool out when the ducklings hatch to make it easier for them to have access to water. But a few questions....

1.How long does it take for mallard ducks to nest before hatching(when they are done laying the eggs)
2.How long does it take for them to learn to fly?
3. What are some of your favourite duck names? there are 9 eggs in total so hopefully 9 ducklings will hatch...
Any other facts we should know?!?!?

THANK YOU!!! <3

Once the duck starts to set plan on 30 days for the hatch. It will take months for the young to learn to fly.( They have to have full feathers for that to happen) Her ducklings will follow her every where, into the pool. Young birds can and do drown if they cannot get out. You will need to provide a ramp or blocks to help the little guys get out of any water your provide. IN nature they ground slopes so it is easy for the babies to get dry. You will need to provide them with some sort of feed. Unless you have a large yard and plenty of greens and insects they will need supplemental food. A feed store will sell you what you need. Get a feed without any medication in it. Remember you are going to have a great deal of poop most of it in your pool. Mother duck will not use a childrens pool. You can provide a small planter saucer for drinking water. That will need to be changed several times a day as they will stand in it.. Good luck

If it is a typical chain link fence then they should be able to escape. Ducklings can wiggle their way through suprisingly small spaces. If it is another kind of fence and you have a gate, then you could open it and let them find their way out. Trying to keep them would put a lot of stress on them. Remember, they are still wild. Good Luck!

She ought to - see you later as you probably did not contact the nest or any of the little ones. Mallards frequently do not abandon that really - yet i doesn't problem her too a lot. must be relaxing to observe over the subsequent couple of weeks.

2. 4 - 7 months it depends on the conditions.

3. Viola is a personal favorite hope you can find other names I'm alittle uncreative right now.
