Question:
Should I get one or two parakeets?
?

So I'm 14 and I have had pets before and I do have pets now (chocolate lab, two cats, hamster and turtle). They are everyone's
pets, but I have had my own pets in the past such as hamsters and I have taken care of them myself. Anyways I have never had a bird before (neither has anyone in my family) and I thought that starting out with a parakeet would be good.
Anyways, I am not a particularly busy girl except for the fact that I go to my Dad's house (my parents are divorced) a couple days of the week sometimes in the summer and every other weekend during the summer and any time of the year. Other than that I'm not busy with sports or clubs or constantly hanging out at a friend's house. I just thought I would tell you that because I know that parakeets are social birds and need lots of attention.
I just can't decide whether to get one or two. I would prefer to have one bird because there will be more bonding time with me and less mess. I am afraid that I have to get two though because I am not always with my Mom at my main house, so when I'm at at my Dad's I'm afraid my bird will get lonely. But I'm not sure if this will happen though. I'll just tell you the reasons I wouldn't like two birds:
They could fight or be jealous of each other
More mess
They could be a male and a female and have babies (which is not what I want)
One of them could be feisty
They could only like each other and not want to bond with me

So that is all, if I had to get two birds I would be okay with it, but I would prefer one. Please tell me what you think I should do.

Thanks! :)

You should get 2 of them. Some small birds need companions and eventually die being solo. Get 2 female birds so thwy can give each other some company and a bigger cage. Think about it, your imprisoning a bird that was meant to fly and be free.

Instead they have their wings clipped and kept prisoners in a cramped cage..

You have other pets, some im pretty sure your aware that animals get depressed being cooped up. It may not be obvious with ur turtle or hamster, but you can definately see a dog or cat's emotional behavior.

Two birds, they'll be no more difficult than one honestly. The mess is fairly much the same.

If you are not there every day for multiple hours they bird will be alone and without attention. Please get two. They won't be jealous, everyone gets into disagreements but many budgies aren't vicious to new comers especially if they already share a cage in the store. The mess is not bad. Males are all feisty, females can be mean. Just make sure when you get two they both have dark blue/purple ceres (the skin thing above their beak where their nose is). Two females are more likely to be territorial towards each other.

my family got one parakeet to start out with, hoping to bond with him and teach him how to talk (unfortunately this didn't happen...) anyway, we decided it would be best to get him a friend so we took him to the breeder (please go to a breeder, they are much more reputable than petsmart or anyplace like that, if you could go to a bird rescue that would be even better) where they have a special cage so that you can put two birds next to each other to see if they get along, but they are still safely separated. anyway the breeder observed my bird and the one we tried out and they seemed to get along so we took both of them home and they have been living as happy little friends for about a year now

anyway long story short, get one to start out, to bond with and get used to having a bird as a pet, and then when you feel its appropriate, take in a new friend

You should get 2 so when u go to your dads house they wont get bored. If u don't want then to have babies then you should get 2 boys because the girls fight a lot when they are together. Make sure that the have enough food and water before you go to your dads house. :)
