I have two full grown parakeets, and my current cage is APPROXIMATELY 18 x 12 (maybe) and I was just wondering, is that big enough? I would get a bigger cage, but my family can't afford one bigger. I mean, we have enough money for the food and water and bedding for it, but we don't have enough for another cage. So, is that big enough???

No, the cage is not big enough. I have bred birds for 12 years & know the appropriate cage sizes.

The 18x18x18 someone else mentioned is ok for 1 budgie(parakeet). You definately need a bigger cage. They are not getting the excersize they need & therefore will become lazy & over weight.

Get on freecycle.org & look for a group in your area. Everything on this site is free. I am always finding free bird cages & supplies. There is no reason to put your birds through that kind of stress...Replace the cage as soon as you can.

Good luck & God bless!

There is no reason to spend money on bedding when you can use plain old newspaper on the bottom of the cage. Even paper towels are fine. Or better yet, there are free wanted ads at the super market that come in books that you can cut to fit the bottom tray. Every other day pull out the tray, rip off the top page of the book, and you have a clean sheet of paper for that day. That will save you some money for a new bigger cage in a few months.

There is always a neighbor that needs a lawn cut for a few weeks that could help the cost of a cage too.

If you look at the space the birds have WITH toys in the cage, it's not a very big cage. To give the birds the room they need, please hang the toys on the sides of the cage and not in the middle. This will give the birds room to flap their wings without hurting themselves or getting caught in toys.

Good Luck!

Try a thrift store like Good Will. They have cages or a few dollars. Yard sales and for sale adds in the paper are good too. Parakeets need a cage bigger than you have. They will be ok but they do not have enough room to get the proper exercise.

It sounds big enough, but it's the bar spacing that's more important here than cage size. Since a budgie is a small bird, the spacing shouldn't be wide enough for him to get his head through. Measure the bar spacing. It shouldn't be more than 1/2".

I have parakeets too, in fact we have three new ones that are just getting their pinfeathers. We are excited as they are our first babies. Anyway, Bigger is better, but they are just fine for the time being in your cage. As long as they are fed and clean, a bigger cage will just have to wait.

18"x18"x18" is a good size for budgies

and rectangular or square cages are better than

ones shaped like houses or spaceships.

A cage for a single budgie should be as close to 18"x18"x18" as possible and bigger is ALWAYS better. There is no such thing as a cage that is "too big" for your budgie!
