Get a copy of Bird Talk Magazine there are a list of Breeders in there. Or contact your local Vet's office and ask then if any of their Clients are bird breeders and who would they recommend who to buy from.

When I first started our Avairy, the owner of the birds went to our Vet and asked him whohe would recommend to sell his birds to, we were refered and the breeder met with us a couple of times before he sold us all his birds from his Avairy, so it works both ways.

not a pet shop. my mother in law is a budgie breeder, and tells me the pet shops get the rejects and charge more too. i don't know anything much about budgies, but i do know that pet shop budgies look very mangy compared to her healthy ones. the other thing she said about buying from pet shops is the bird is probably the wrong age (too old). to have a nice tame one, you need to buy a bird at just the right age & one that's used to being handled.

Check locally for breeders instead of going to petstores. Pet shops may have an abumdance of birds, but these bird have little to no human attention, which can promote unhealthy or destructive behaviors and mental problems. You are looking for HAND-FED parakeets. These parakeets have the most human attention and are more apt to bond with you versus the parent-raised parakeets that just want to be with other birds rather then people.

...and your local newspaper classifieds. Sometimes your petstores will have a "community board" where privite breeders will advertise they have birds for sale, or people will advertise they need to re-home their birds. Before buying from a pet shop, check all other avenues first. There are also rescue groups you can look at for a parakeet, or ask your local avian veterinarian to refer you to a breeder.

Go through a rescue society or a private breeder. Do NOT buy one from a pet store. They have chronic health problems, severe temperment disorders and buying them increases the demand for birds in a very cruel international export trade.

I have always gotten mine from a pet shop. I can see why a breeder or rescue group is better, but if you spend enough time with the bird it will turn out just as friendly.

well if you are in aussie then almost anywhere. just dont buy from places where there hasnt been any new blood other wise your bird might have problems, such as a feather loosing disease etc..
