Question:
My canaries are paired now but are having trouble with their nest?

I have two canaries, one male, one female.
They've only been together in the same cage since Easter Sunday but seem to be getting along fine.
I've noticed signs of breeding intention (male feeding female, male singing repetitively, female shredding newspaper etc) so I put in a little homemade nest by way of wire through a mini plastic bowl.

The nest building seems to be somewhat of a problem, however.
Yesterday a perfect, neat nest was seen but later I saw the male pulling apart the nest. Later my female made up the nest again but this afternoon she started unweaving it and left it all on the cage floor.

Should I make it for them or will they reject this?
They were seen copulating this afternoon and I'm a little worried there will be no nest if eggs should happen.

Any advice on this matter or on new canary breeding would be much appreciated. I'm new to this.

Thanks,
Emzi

Nest building is artwork, and your canaries are perfectionists. Let them get on with it, they know exactly what they are doing. Mine, made several nests but the one I liked they pulled apart. You can buy a little nest box (cheap) in the pet shop, it sort of hooks up. Put it where the can jump into it from a perch, but quite high up in the cage. What I did, I bought some artificial nesting material, but mine didn't like it, so then I shredded some kitchen roll and put at the bottom of the cage. It was fun watching them, getting it and putting it into the nest. They'll get it ready in time you'll see. Mind you I went through tons of kitchen roll, couldn't put it in quick enough, they were so fast building the nest, once they got serious. Have fun!

Canary Nest Box

I think the first problem is the female needs to be left alone to build her nest. Usually canaries are bred in a canary breeding cage ( a cage with a divider where you will keep male on one side and female on the other w/ nest). This way, the female can build her nest with out inturruption and you can introduce the male when she is finished and when you see signs that he is interested. Most petstores sell the open bowl type nests, which are best to put into the cage... it requires minimal nest building for them and they seem to enjoy them very much. Good luck!

I read that you should put a jute "felt" insert into the plastic/wire nest cup and sew it in so the birds don't rip it out. This is what I bought off Ebay

Seems to be working for me, my male is singing a little more lately and the female is warbling too, they have shredded paper in the nest as well so fingers crossed?

First time breeding for me too although I have bred finches and lovebirds many years ago.
