So, we have a rooster who is constantly attacking people whenever we go near the coop to collect eggs. We need to put him down and I want to do it humanely. I've never killed a rooster before and don't know how. And I've read about grabbing them when they are asleep and then chopping their heads off. I just don't know if I have the heart to do it. I know that makes me sounds weak but whatever. So would using slugs or birdshot be better? And I don't think we really care too much if we get to eat him or not. But he needs to go as he not only attacks us but the hens he is with too.

You don't sound weak Rex, you sound human. Its not easy to take something's life and it shouldn't be taken lightly. Don't go blasting away with a shotgun in the chicken coop, like you said, grab it at night, and put it in a separate pen. If you're not eating him, from 15-20 yards away, fill him with buckshot, like number 8 or 9. Pay attention to what is behind him before you shoot, then bury him deep. You gotta do what you gotta do...

Put some food on the ground . When rooster goes for food use Golf Club and knock off head .

If the rooster is otherwise useful, just break him of the attack habit by demonstrating that YOU are the alpha in the flock. One way is by going in with a piece of netting in your hand. When he attacks, put the netting in his way, so his toes and spurs get tangled. Lift to turn him upside down or dump him on his keister. One treatment might do it but keep the netting with you until you are sure you can collect eggs safely.

Can you even discharge a firearm where you live? That is the first consideration. Can you do it without getting the hens? A shotgun is really overkill (no pun intended) for a bird. You can also net him, and then dispose of him humanely.

You're disgusting. Take it to a vet and have it euthanized humanely.

Use whatever shells you have lying around. Much easier to grab him by the neck next time he attacks you and just spin his head off. Then simmer him in water with some onions garlic celery and carrot until he is tender. Then you can make enchiladas with him.

And rather than use common sense to, I don't know, call a game warden or animal control, you'd sooner shoot it and get a potential fine than have it removed...wow.
