Blackbirds are smaller, tend to be more plump, have a shorter beak and most species are songbirds. Crows are larger, have a proportionally longer body, a longer beak and a harsh call.

Crows may be in Northern California, but rarely. The majority of them only go as far up as mid-state. Ravens, a relative of crows and roughly similar in size and appearance, appear almost everywhere in the Northern U.S. including North California. Blackbirds also populate that area, but their size is easily discernible from the much larger crows and ravens.

There are several subspecies of Black Birds, belonging to the Icterinae family and very rarely are they actually completely black, with the Red Wing Black Bird being the most common of these beautiful birds. The North American Crow, Raven and several other birds including the Blue Jay belong to the Corvidae Family.
