If you're in the U.S. it's completely illegal. There are several laws protecting wild birds.

Collecting eggs is stupid and pointless. When you grow up a bit and get wise you will throw away the eggs anyway.

And then, going for the rare breeds.

You know what extinct means?

"Collecting" eggs from a nest is unwise. They could be fertile eggs, the the loss of a perfectly good egg contributes to species decline. Most of your "rare breeds" of birds are a protected and endangered species, and if you are caught with the eggs of these birds, you will be prosecuted as a poacher of the species. It is unlikely you can do this "hobby" without proper licensing as an ornithologist.

You may collect shells, but I know if people disturb nests of most owls, eagles and penguins and they are a viable eggs you are taking, you can get yourself into some deep trouble, and there are major fines and jail time associated with that hobby.
