Hello.

We have an 8 year old female eclectus parrot. Last night I gave her a little orange juice before I went to bed. Today when wokd up she was tapping her toes and also gripping and releasing the cage. It looks like that they are involuntary movements. She also picked out a few small feathers which is uncharacteristic. I think she might be suffering from a vitamin overdose. Is there anything out there which could flush her liver/kidneys and save her from the OD? I plan on getting to the vet tomarrow but in the mean time?

You may need to have a look at her diet.

I doubt it is a vit OD unless you specifically gave her vit sups the day before.

The main causes for toe tapping are imbalanced diet, allergy to food recently given, calcium deficiency, eaten food that has already started to go off so check all of these options first.

If it's a reaction to the orange juice you gave her then don't give her any more & there should be an improvement with 1 -2 days. If it worsens you need to take her to an avian vet familiar with eclectus parrots.

Don't panic just yet. If it's a mild toe tap it usually can be stopped within a couple of days. Just look at anything different that she's had & eliminate them. It could possibly be an allergy to the juice, or what the actual ingredients are in the juice if she also plucked a few feathers. She may have also just started to moult & moulted out a few feathers over night.

My eclectus is also prone to toe tapping so his diet needs to be kept in check. He hasn't toe tapped in over 1 year now. His diet consists of fresh food only & very little pellet & seed.

I have a pair of eclectus and I'm sorry to hear about your troubles.

This is what I know which may or may not help:

•Volkman's is the best diet for them. I get mine from Chirp-n-Squawk. Any food that is fortified with extra vitamins seems to mess up there digestive tract and cause problems as do pellets and colored foods.

•Susie Christian is a reknowned authority on eclectus having written several books. Call her at: 805-772-2038

Good luck!

It may be nothing to do with Vitamins too.

Unless the orange juice was freshly squeezed from oranges by you, it may well contain many other chemicals.

The usual addatives you may expect are preservatives, colourings, flavour enhancers, other fruit juices, processed sugars.

Check the lable of the container for the juice.

Meanwhile water is the only thing I can think of.
